Training on Sustainable Tourism and Alternative Mobility within the BalkanVelo Project

Training on Sustainable Tourism and Alternative Mobility within the BalkanVelo Project

From September 16 to 18, 2026, a three-day training session was held at the "Apolonia" Hotel in Gevgelija as part of the "Balkan alternative mobility routes for sustainable all-season tourism" (BalkanVelo) project. The training focused on enhancing knowledge and practical skills related to tourism management, the development of new forms of tourism, and the application of alternative and sustainable mobility.

Through lectures and practical activities, participants explored opportunities for creating and developing sustainable tourism products, as well as ways to better utilize natural and cultural heritage, local traditions, and existing tourism services. The training also emphasized the quality of tourism services, visitor communication, and safety—key aspects in creating a high-quality, sustainable tourism offering.

A field visit to the village of Sermenin was an integral part of the training, allowing participants to see firsthand the activities being implemented under the BalkanVelo project. Activities in Sermenin include renovation and refurbishment of the old school, which is slated to be converted into a multimedia tourism center. Concurrently, a new bicycle path is being constructed; this will contribute to creating new tourism attractions and improving conditions for the development of cycling and active tourism. Developing these tourism offerings in Sermenin is part of a broader approach to diversifying the Municipality of Gevgelija’s tourism offer by connecting its natural and cultural heritage with new forms of active and sustainable tourism. This creates conditions for increased tourism activity and year-round visitor stays.

The "BalkanVelo" project is being implemented under the Interreg VI-A IPA Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Bulgaria – North Macedonia 2021–2027. The Municipality of Gevgelija is a project partner, while the Municipality of Razlog (Republic of Bulgaria) serves as the lead partner.
